Honorable Boston Mayor Marty Walsh (front, center) and an estimated 3,000 Bostonians pose for photographer Gregory Heisler for Sports Illustrated's cover shoot in remembrance of the Boston Marathon attack.

On April 12th, 2014, over 3,000 Bostonians that included, survivors, EMTs, firefighters, police officers, city-workers, supporters and the Honorable Mayor Marty Walsh all came together to be part of a momentous production for a Sports Illustrated cover shoot. The Boston community joined Sports Illustrated @SINow at the finish line of the 2014 Boston Marathon at Boylston and Dartmouth to commemorate “Boston Strong.” The production was shot by photographer Greg Heisler and captured by SI productions. The photos will be the cover of the April 21 issue (on stands April 16) and be part of a bonus feature from SI Senior Writer Scott Price about the marathon and the Boston community with stories of many runners from the 2013 race.

Fans began lining up as early as 5 A.M. to be part of the shoot which lasted approximately two hours. “The energy of the crowd at the Sports Illustrated cover shoot reflected the resiliency of Boston and the spirit of its citizens. We are glad Sports Illustrated took this approach-it really captured what it means to be Boston Strong,” said Mayor Walsh.

Arredondo was hailed as a hero by media and fellow citizens after acting selflessly in the immediate aftermath of last year’s attacks, where he helped victims and first responders.

Of the crowd, SI’s Director of Photography, Brad Smith said, “3,000 Bostonians came out today and proved how far this city has come in a year. The excitement and enthusiasm will translate to a legendary cover photo, captured by an iconic photographer Greg Heisler.” Director of Photography Brad Smith worked with Boston-based M Doucette Production company on the shoot. M Doucette Production hired all local photo assistants, supplied the photo equipment, helped to promote for the extras needed to fill the streets, arranged accommodations and schedules, supplied the crane to lift Heisler and digital technician Matt Baldelli up in the air. M Doucette Production managed the crowds on-set to make for a perfect day. See all the excitement on their Facebook page and visit their site.
