Ty Milford Shoots His Dream Project for Porsche
September 9, 2017
This project for Porsche was commissioned via the agency Atlantic Re:think. Production company Rennfilms, which I co-founded, was brought in to shoot a library of still images of three Porsche enthusiasts with three different models on location in San Francisco, California. The subjects included a Los Angeles-based fashion consultant, a London-based automotive journalist and a New York-based businessman and race car driver. While none of the subjects had experienced the Porsche model they were paired with, they were all drivers and eager to explore the details and have some time behind the wheel on a closed course.
We shot in an area off of the port of San Francisco known as Dog Patcha, which is known for its visually impressive array of industrial and post apocalyptic urban structures. On our shoot day, we had approximately 1.5 hours with each subject. Within that timeframe, we had to shoot their initial reactions, their exploration of the ergonomics and styling and finally some aggressive driving through a predetermined course in the area.
We started shooting at a derelict ship building factory—an amazing backdrop for the entire collection and one that would allow us to shoot almost exclusively with natural light, perfect for providing that editorial feel and for accomplishing our goals in a short time span.
Knowing that our allocated time frame with each individual subject would be tight, we arrived the night before the shoot to photograph the vehicles individually. Porsche had also asked for some video capture with the stills, so we did a bulk of the video during this time as well.
This was a dream project and one that I am very proud of. I have been a Porsche enthusiast since I was around ten years old and love the brand. To have the opportunity to not only shoot for them, but to essentially be told that ‘we love what you do, please come do it for us’ by them is really a dream way to work, and it wouldn’t have happened without having my brand, Rennfilms, which focuses on automotive and motorsport lifestyle stills and films.
