A Unique Collaboration Celebrating Cuban Dance
January 9, 2018
Los Angeles-based photographer Eric Politzer and his Cuban colleague Ramsés H. Batista exhibited their second annual commissioned photo exhibit on behalf of the Cuban National Ballet in October and November. The exhibit was held at Havana’s legendary Gran Teatro in celebration of the Teatro’s 70th Anniversary.
Last year, the two photographers mounted another exhibit for the Cuban National Ballet at the iconic Art Deco Teatro Malle as part of the Havana International Ballet Festival. Coincidentally, the Martha Graham Dance Company, was performing at the Teatro Malle as the principal guest dance company during the Festival.
Politzer has been photographing dancers in Cuba for the last five years, while Batista has been working with dancers for the better part of his twenty year career as a photographer in Havana. According to Politzer, “To our knowledge this is the first time that an American and Cuban photographer held multiple exhibits for the Cuban National Ballet, let alone in Cuba as a whole. It was a tremendous honor for us to be asked by the Ballet to do these shows not only because they are one of the great ballet ensembles of the world, but also because they are revered in Cuba itself. For us it was a chance to celebrate Cuba culture as a whole while highlighting this amazing theater the Ballet calls home.”
