Hesh Hipp Explores Wine in Sicily and at London’s Real Wine Fair
April 8, 2018
Advertising and editorial photographer Hesh Hipp, recently connected with Les Caves de Pyrène, a wine agent, importer and distributor who specializes in organic and bio-dynamic wines. The goal of the collaboration was to produce an image library for Les Caves de Pyrène’s international marketing. To accomplish the task, Hipp traveled to multiple vineyards at the base of Mount Etna in Sicily and photographed the ancient process of winemaking. “There, I was able to experience the entire harvest process from handpicking and weighing grapes to steaming and processing, to fermentation, pressing and different storing, aging and bottling techniques,” Hipp says. He worked alongside incredible winemakers and regularly put down the camera to take some time to, as he says, “get my hands dirty and really feel the work”.
Hipp also attended the Real Wine Fair at London’s Tobacco Dock. More than 2,000 visitors attended, some coming from as far as Japan, Chile, Australia and the US. There, some 173 artisan growers from 20 countries around the world gathered to pour and present over 700 organic, bio-dynamic and natural wines to consumers, trade and members of the press. At the event, Hipp and his team made portraits of winemakers and photographed some of the many events associated with the four-day event.
“This project was a life-changer. I met some amazing people and exponentially expanded my world, my knowledge, and my love of wine and food. As well, it allowed me to continue a passion for photographing and elevating those who work with their hands and truly make beautiful things.”
